my story
As a communication scientist, speech-language pathologist, and Mensa Foundation Board Trustee, I've dedicated my career to exploring the intersections of language, technology, and human potential. My journey, shaped by personal experiences with Tourette's syndrome, has led me to innovative approaches in supporting neurodivergent individuals and rethinking how we nurture human intelligence in the age of AI.
At iTherapy, LLC, where I serve as Chief Technology Officer, we're pioneering AI-driven solutions for communication disorders. Our flagship project, EASI-AS (Evaluative Artificial Speech Intelligence and Autism Screener), is at the forefront of revolutionizing autism screening and assessment. This innovative platform leverages cutting-edge AI technologies to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of speech and language evaluations, with a specific focus on autism spectrum disorders.
In addition to EASI-AS, our product InnerVoice has gained recognition for its novel approach to supporting individuals with autism and other communication challenges. This work earned the Mensa Foundation's Intellectual Benefits to Society Award in 2013, which has now come full circle with my appointment to the Mensa Foundation Board.
My passion for interdisciplinary approaches is reflected in my diverse background. As a professional drummer, I've performed with groups like Freighter and miRthkon, and collaborated with jazz pianist Larry Vuckovich. These musical experiences have deepened my understanding of how rhythm, language, and cognition intersect.
Through my project, Drum Language, I explore the relationships between music, language, and education. This unique blend of expertise informs my work in developing AI technologies that empower individuals across the communicative spectrum.
I'm also committed to advancing our understanding of human intelligence. As a speaker at the National Academies and a member of the American Society for AI, I frequently discuss the integration of neuroscience and technology in educational settings and the potential of AI to enhance human capabilities.
Beyond my professional pursuits, I'm a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a lifelong downhill skier, and a speed bagger. These diverse interests have shaped my approach to skill development and mastery, influencing my methods in drumming, therapeutic intervention, and innovation.
As co-publisher of Autism Digest and through my role at the Mensa Foundation, I strive to share insights into communication development, technology, musical thinking, and evidence-based practices. My goal is to make a positive impact on the lives of those with communication challenges and to foster human intelligence in all its diverse forms.
In my personal life, I'm a husband, father, and stepfather to three kids. This aspect of my life adds an extra layer of meaning to my work, motivating me to create a better world for my family and others. I'm passionate about exploring new rhythms, unusual genre combinations, and innovative sounds - both in music and in life.
Join me on this journey of music, language, and learning as we explore the frontiers of human potential in the age of AI.
